2022 Acura MDX Type S Ultra

Overview

At a time of ongoing and never-stopping “SUVization”, Honda’s luxury brand introduced a “Sportier” version of its midsize and best-selling Acura MDX.

The Type S badge is deeply rooted in Acura’s performance history, symbolizing the sportiest variant of the corresponding vehicle. Acura used this badge before on the RSX as well as the first- and second-generation NSX.

A large three-row SUV with the character of a sports car like the NSX? At least this was the direction Acura wanted to go with a more powerful engine, Brembo brakes, and for the first time on an MDX, an adaptive air suspension.

2022 Acura MDX Type S Ultra: Engine and powertrain

Beneath the hood of the S Type Ultra model lies a powerhouse, ditching the old naturally aspirated V6 for a spirited 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that unleashes a robust 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a slick 10-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, this setup transforms every drive into an exhilarating experience.

What sets this turbocharged beast apart is its love for high revs, a passion so intense that it makes you forget about the absence of a V8 engine. But the real game-changer here is the torque delivery. Unlike its predecessor, the maximum torque kicks in as low as 1,400 rpm, and there’s no discernible turbo lag to dampen the excitement. Thanks to Acura’s super-handling AWD system, the torque is artfully distributed to each wheel, ensuring optimal performance and control on any road. It’s a harmonious blend of power, precision, and a touch of turbocharged magic that propels the S Type Ultra into a league of its own.

Design

The current-gen MDX turns heads with its captivating design. Now, meet the Type-S Ultra – a visual stunner with 21-inch wheels, attention-commanding front bumper, exclusive Tiger Eye Pearl paint, and bold quad exhaust tips. Inside, it’s luxury redefined, boasting nine massage modes in the front seats, a 1000-watt ELS sound system, and lavish heating features. Despite the inevitable cramped third row, the Type-S Ultra prioritizes the thrill of the drive and accessible luxury, making it an automotive masterpiece.

Driving Impressions

As we are familiar with other Acuras we tested earlier, the steering is quick and precise. Steering requires less effort than most cars in similar situations we feel the road at your fingertips in all three steering modes.  The 10-speed automatic transmission works in better harmony and flawlessly upshifts and downshifts but is not so fluent when you want to shift manually with paddle shifters.

And the new Sport+ mode derived from the NSX increases your adrenaline in certain situations like overtaking another car on the highway.

The adaptive air suspension is the sweetest aspect when you drive the Type S Ultra. With adaptive dampers and four-height settings, driving is smooth and stable on the highway, as well as on bumpy city roads. The air suspension also lowers the vehicle at highway speeds for maximum aerodynamic efficiency and raises it for extra ground clearance.

In essence, it seems to have struck the ideal balance between the exhilaration of sporty driving and the pragmatic allure of an SUV.

Verdict

As a father of a not-so-small family, if you want to combine the practicality of a three-row SUV with sportiness and speed, Acura MDX Type S Ultra may be your favourite choice.
