2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum: Overview
The 2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum (the version we tested) is the biggest SUV Ford offers.
Ford lets you choose from two different bodies; The Expedition and Expedition Max. The difference between the two is the extra cargo space behind the third row of the Max.
This difference might be significant depending on the purpose. The big SUVs made by American manufacturers, namely Ford and GM offer longer body options with their full-size body-on-frame SUVs like Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, as well as the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade.
2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum: Engine and Powertrain
In 2015, Ford dared to move to an all-aluminum body with its critically important F-150 pickup. A similarly progressive step was the abandonment of V8 engines in the last decade. Now, all trims of the Expedition come with a 3.5L V6 with a turbocharger or EcoBoost in Ford’s nomenclature. However, the output of the same engine may change depending on the trim. Our tester, the 2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum) with the range-topping Platinum trim delivers 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. About a decade ago, an SUV of this size and weight would have a V8 under the hood. However thanks to the efficiency of this technologically advanced powerhouse, you will not miss these old, gasoline-drinking engines.
The engine is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission making it a powertrain that moves the big SUV effectively. I did not feel underpowered. You can switch between different driving modes: 4×4 driveline to rear-wheel to 4High, 4Low, and a 4-Auto setting. The Expedition grips the surface and moves confidently.
When you buy an SUV of this size, towing capacity is likely one of the most important criteria. With the standard equipment, The Max already can tow a respectable 6,600 pounds. And with the optional maximum towing package – which our tester had for $894 extra – you tow 9,000 pounds.
2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum: Interior
Are you disappointed with the cramped third row and tiny cargo space of many midsize SUVs including luxury models with a price tag of the far north of 70K? Then, you are in the right vehicle. The Expedition and the Expedition Max provide equally comfortable space also on the third row. Probably the second most important reason (after towing capacity) for choosing this type of vehicle.
In addition to standard features for the Expedition family across all trims, such as tri-zone climate control, hands-free liftgate, navigation, power-folding and power-reclining third-row seats, and a panoramic sunroof; the Platinum offers power running boards, 22-inch wheels, premium sound system, self-parking, massaging front seats, and a 15.5-inch centre touchscreen running the latest version of Ford’s SYNC 4 operating system as standard.
Installed in our tester, the 2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum, the big, tablet-style vertically placed screen is impressive. But it may be a bit complicated and distracting sometimes. A large dial for stereo volume is easy to use and more functions could be controlled via hard buttons and dials instead of screen touch.
Ergonomically, the cabin is well-designed. The commanding view with the comfortable seats in three rows, easy access to all seats and the big cargo volume behind the third row make this vehicle a good choice also as a business vehicle to transport small groups and crowded families with luggage.
The advantage of the Max version over the standard Expedition comes into play when you need more cargo space. With the third row up, the Max has 1,019 litres of cargo space, 428 litres more than the regular Expedition. A significant difference when carrying 5 to 6 passengers plus their luggage.
2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum: Driving Impressions
Honestly, I am not a fan of body-on-frame architecture. But, the big SUVs come with this feature. Nevertheless, the Expedition offers a relatively comfortable ride thanks also to F-150’s optimized underpinnings. Ford made some fine-tuning to improve steering and handling. It is remarkable, especially the tight turning circle compared to the size of the vehicle made a positive difference while driving in Downtown Toronto. On some curvy roads of the Peel Region north of 401, Ford’s gargantuan SUV was more controllable than I expected. It also irons out successfully the road imperfections. A big and remarkable plus for body-on-frame architecture.
Regarding fuel consumption, with our tester, the 2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum, I reached an average of 13.6 litres in a mixed mode with more driving in the city. It is not far from the official rating of 12.9 L/100 km in combined city/highway driving.
2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum: Pricing
Based on the long-time best-selling F-150 pickup, the Expedition starts at $72,285 for the XLT in standard length. The Expedition Max Platinum trim has an MSRP of $98,725. And with options, our tester had our tester price reaches 101,969 before freight and taxes.
2022 Ford Expedition Max Platinum: Conclusion
The Expedition Max is a good choice for a crowded family with lots of stuff to carry and/or tow or for businesses that need more people and cargo space.
