2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T: Overview:

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T

In the last couple of years, Genesis Hyundai’s luxury brand showed that it would be a serious competitor to the established names of the segment, such as Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW.

Genesis started its offerings with sedans, the G90 in particular, however, the much sought-after SUVs came to the market later. And it is very difficult to have a strong presence without SUVs in a brand’s portfolio. Following the midsize SUV, GV80 (that we tested last year), with the compact GV70, Genesis now has a new weapon to conquer more territories in the very competitive compact luxury SUV segment.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T: Design

The horizontally split headlights are a distinct design feature of the current Genesis models

With its distinctive front grille and coupe-like sloping C-pillar, the GV 70 has a distinguishable design and is not dissimilar to Porsche Macan. This is not a bad thing. The rear section reduces the cargo volume for the sake of the beautiful design and in a luxury SUV with a styling character, this makes sense.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T: Engine and powertrain

The 2.5L, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine delivers 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, transfers it to an 8-speed automatic transmission

Genesis offers two turbocharged engine options for the GV70: The 2.5 litre, 4-cylinder (our tester), and the 3.5-litre V6.

Our tester with the smaller 2.5-litre engine delivers 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed transmission and AWD with terrain mode is standard. This engine was powerful enough in the city and on the highway.  But, the consumption was below our expectations with almost 12 litres on average.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T: Interior

The first thing about the interior I remember after our test drive is very comfortable and easily adjustable seats with the three-stage heat and ventilation settings. Except for the base trim level, genuine leather upholstery is a standard feature. With heated front and rear seats and steering wheel and tri-zone climate control, this vehicle meets or exceeds Canadian standards when it comes to climate comfort.

The leather-appointed front seats are very comfortable and comparable to the best in this class

The combination of aluminum, wood, leather and high-quality plastics creates a truly luxurious ambience.

Nevertheless Genesis engineers probably already noted some improvements for the next generation or even mid-cycle refreshment. In some instances, I confused the infotainment control with the shift dial. If you own this vehicle, you will ultimately get used to it.

The 14.5-inch infotainment screen has also touchscreen controls but is not so easily reachable since it is mounted deep on the dashboard and closer to the windscreen. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

The Lexicon premium Audio with 18 speakers provides a great musical experience and this is in fact one of the key moments that you feel you are in a luxury vehicle.

The 15.4-inch infotainment screen has a high resolution, good to read with fast response to commands, but not very practical to reach touchscreen controls, control dial is not the best solution either, in our subjective opinion

The rear seat adjustments are manual, with levers just inside the tailgate you can stow the rear seats. With them upright, there are 819 litres behind the back seats. Stowing the 60/40-split folding bench yields 1,610 L in total, while towing capacity stands at 1,588 kg.

Despite the sloping rear, the cargo volume behind the seats is deep and practical with 819 litres

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T: Driving Impressions

The sound insulation for a quiet cabin is a must to feel the difference between a luxury and a mass-market vehicle and in this regard, the GV 70 does not disappoint.  The ride quality is on the stiffer side, and we think that Genesis had a close look at its German competitors. You feel the potholes of the “mined streets” of Toronto even if you drive slower than legal limits but the vehicle stays well on course.

The feeling with electric steering and brakes is good. It is firm enough to give you confidence at low speeds.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T: Conclusion

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T

it is a challenge to carve out a market share in a segment where decades-long prestigious brands dominate. And we also need to remember that buyers of luxury brands are more conservative for these people accepting a new brand takes time. based on the growth figures in Canada and the USA lex at genesis is doing a great job and the brand gets widespread acceptance

Because the Genesis brand was officially announced as an independent marque only seven years ago with the first standal one model, G90 introduced in 2017, the model range and reputation today, Genesis came a long way in a very short time and in 2020, J.D. Power named Genesis the most dependable automotive brand and in 2021 the most technologically innovative in North America.
