Since its launch in Detroit Motor Show in 2012, we tested different versions of the Fusion.
Ford’s midsize sedan is highly successful car in a shrinking market segment as we witness the rise of CUV’s and SUV’s across all segments. Adding new variations to a popular model range makes sense, though with some limitations. We will revisit this aspect shortly.
Ford offers a 2.7-liter twin-turbo (Ecoboost) V6 making 325 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque as the only engine option. It is mated to a new six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
With 1,8 tonnes, it is a heavy car in its class. However, this never shadows its sportiness.
Our test vehicle in ruby red costs $44,448 fully loaded and $450 extra for this colour are included in the price. Dark earth gray leather seats are standard.
It is fun to drive an American sedan so powerful comparable to premium German sedans. With continuous signals from 12 sensors, in “Sport” mode the shocks are in their stiffest setting, so the wheel doesn’t drop all the way in a pothole. It is still not a bone-crashing drive and you will probably still enjoy it.
The average consumption of 12 liters in a mixed mode driving is reasonable for this performance.
Conclusion
With the Sport, Ford added a new and attractive option to the Fusion Family. This model comes with a powerful engine, leather seats and almost all comfort and safety features for a price which is around 20K cheaper than a comparable Lincoln MKZ. Both cars share the same platform and even the same interior to certain extent. This is a potential problem and a warning for a better brand differentiation.
