BMW 340i XDrive: Aging Gracefully With A Young Powerplant
BMW is the second most valuable auto brand with a value of USD 26,837 million based on the latest market research of BrandZ/Milward Brown. (following Toyota with 29,501)
So far, BMW is also the sales leader in the US market among luxury brands with 346K units in the first five months of 2016.
The Bavarians have been producing 3 Series vehicles since 1975 and roughly every third BMW sold is a 3 Series model.
The current model range represents the 6th generation and you should expect the completely new model (7th gen) in 2017, possibly to be launched at the Frankfurt International Auto Show (IAA).
Bearing this in mind, the current model is mature, refined and technologically up-to date. It ages gracefully.
Our test vehicle was a 340i, sedan the model replacing the former 335i, with a brand-new all-aluminium (internally named as B58), inline six-cylinder, 3.0-litre engine with the BMW TwinPower Turbo. And the four-wheel drive, (X-Drive in BMW-jargon) is almost a must in the luxury segment of the Canadian market.
The driving pleasure is typically BMW and you will not be disappointed. Mated to 8-speed auto with manual mode and driving settings stretching from Eco-pro to Sport, you will familiarize yourself with difference characters of the same automobile: From smooth, eco to agile-sporty. Linear acceleration of the engine followed by a turbo boost once you pass “the point of no-return” is a pleasure unique to “ultimate driving machine”. Having said that we found the driving mode in “Eco-Pro” mode too much under-powered. Unless you are addicted to “fuel economy”, I bet, you will not choose this setting.
I have to give big credit to the infotainment system. In more than 10 years, BMW has almost perfected this already user-friendly command and control system for audio, navigation, and many other settings. The infotainment screen, slightly raised from the dash for easy reading, you can scroll through with this intuitive, (called i-Drive) knob on the console, and without distraction.
The legroom in the rear is a bit tight but within limits of the compact-luxury class. Expect up to two-centimeters more in the next generation.
During our one-week test drive in mixed mode, we reached an average of 12 liters. Being not a champion of fuel economy, this high-performance sedan has an acceptable fuel consumption.
Although the next generation of the 3 Series is on the horizon, this vehicle is dynamic, attractive in design and very up-to-date in performance with a brand-new engine.
